Saturday 27th February saw forty-three members of the Bedale and Aiskew Runners (BAR) attend the Annual Awards and Dinner Evening held at Bedale Golf Club. The current chair could not attend the evening, but the annual report was read out by Claire Temple on his behalf.
What an amazing 2022 year it has been for BAR, its members and the impact it has had on Bedale and the local community. An Endure 48 event held at BASA raised £5000 for the charity MND, food and essential needs were collected and donated to the Hambleton Food Bank along with regular volunteering and take overs at Northallerton Park Run were the few events mentioned of the many. But as individuals members have raised thousands of pounds for their chosen charities through various running challenges undertaken. 2023 has started in an equally amazing way with some fantastic individual and team performances already with many more to come.
The Attendance Award was the first award to be presented. Due to the high attendance during 2022 this award was closely contended and awarded to Mary McDonald.
2022 saw Park Runs truly get back to normal and throughout the year and many BAR members have personally achieved their 25, 50 or 100 Park Runs milestones. The Park Run Attendance Award not only recognises those who have run but also the importance of volunteers to support the event and so this award deservedly went to Sarah Norman.
The Club Championship Awards are open to all members of the club whatever their ability and everyone of these winners showed real commitment representing BAR throughout the year at a large range of events and variety of distances. The award winners are:
Handicap
Female Overall – Sarah Pardington
Female Runner Up – Julie Elsey
Male Overall – Paul Bainbridge
Male Runner Up – James Wigglesworth
Championship
Female Overall – Ann Harrington
Female Runner Up – Sarah Beale
Male Overall – Will Retchless
Male Runner Up – Matt Randall
There were many members who came into consideration for the Most Improved Runner during 2022 and caused a great deal of debate as to who should be worthy of the award. But after deliberation Sarah Pardington was awarded Most Improved Female Runner for her commitment to running to increase the distances and quietly take on the challenges presented.
James Wigglesworth was awarded the Most Improved Male Runner again for his commitment to running during 2022.
Training for events however big or small takes careful planning before setting foot over the start line. Again, the Best Individual Effort Award caused some debate because of the variety and breadth the club members challenge themselves with. After consideration Karen Alford was presented the female Best Individual Effort Award for completing the Marathon Des Sables, a six-day ultra-race ran over 150miles (254km) in the Sahara Desert and classed as the toughest foot race on the planet. Matt Randell was awarded male Best Individual Effort for completing Lakes in a Day a 50mile (80km) ultra-race with a total 4000m of elevation which Matt completed in a time of 15:07:49.
The Brain Hall Award is voted by the BAR Members and goes to the person who has shown commitment to the club away from running and has been recognised for their efforts throughout the year. This years winner was Ann Harrington not only for her commitment to running but also the work supporting the committee in the activities it does.
