Press Update 9 July

The Burn Valley half marathon has some testing climbs to encounter, and with the hot weather conditions was not to be taken lightly. Five runners from the Bedale and Aiskew Club lined up with over 220 other athletes. Paul Berry had a storming run to finish first club member in a time of 1 hour 42 minutes and 54 seconds and 42nd place overall. After the recent AGM, new club Treasurer Paul Simpson was next to finish in 1-45.36 and 54th overall. Nicola Simpson, who is running really well at present finished 75th overall in 1-51.26 and 3rd out of 27 in the W40 age group. Raymond Lightle does not miss many weekends without racing and this was no exception having competed in the Catterick 5K Parkrun the day before in a fabulous time of 21.59. Raymond finished the half marathon in 1-57.48 for 102nd overall, followed by Phil Johnston in 2-09.29 and 145th. Second claim members Isobel Starkey recorded 2-04.48 for 126th and Lena Conlin 2-13.02 for 151st.

The previous weekend an event at Bramham Park in Leeds called the Mizuno Endure 24 took place. This is a popular event where competitors challenge themselves to complete a 5 mile course as many times as possible over the 24 hour period. Club long distance runners Julie Giblin and Kim Taylor-Maskell ran in the solo women category along with 86 others. Pacing themselves well and keeping each other motivated, they both completed ten laps of the course, a total of 50 miles, in a running time of 14 hours 41 minutes, and 45th position overall.

In recent Parkrun events, Rachel Tait ran at Prudoe recording 25.48, Henry Anderson was at Fountains Abbey finishing in 22.29, and John Hunter recorded 30.25 at Barrow-in-Furness.

June Press Updates

11th June 2018

James Bartram is a relatively new member of the Bedale and Aiskew Running Club but has made a big impact with his training on a Wednesday evening. All this hard work has culminated in him taking on several challenges this year for the British Heart Foundation. After completing the London Marathon in April his final challenge of the year was to lead a team of 18 around the National 3 Peaks in 24 hours. This takes in scaling Scafell Pike in England, Snowden in Wales and Ben Nevis in Scotland, a total of 23 miles running and 10,000 feet of ascent, never mind nearly 500 miles of travelling between the peaks. As an extra fund raising activity James was sponsored to have the highest haircut in the UK at the top of Ben Nevis, raising £700 for the charity.

Meanwhile other members of the Club were taking on slightly less time consuming activity in five different Parkrun events. Peter Bridgstock was in Shetland recording 28.05 for the 5K course, while Paul and Nicola Simpson were at Princess Park in Liverpool finishing in 21.23 and 23.16 respectively. Nearer to home at Catterick Raymond Lightle finished in 21.56, with John Hunter in 29.38, and second claim member Lena Conlin in 26.06. At Darlington Raymond Lightle recorded 23.13, while at Northallerton Anne Johnson finished in 28.20, and Alex McNairn and granddaughter Lola in 30.11.

25th June 2018

A Wednesday evening 10 mile race in Otley recently attracted nearly 400 runners in total, from across Yorkshire, to take on a challenging route known for the long steep hills and beautiful scenery. Bedale runners Paul and Nicola Simpson took on the course with Paul finishing in a time of 1 hour 16 mins 17 secs and a position of 132. Nicola was the 35th female runner to finish in 1-23.15 and an overall position of 228.

The next race in the Bedale club’s championship was the Newton Aycliffe 10K. The conditions were dry and warm, but the strong breeze combined with the undulating course made the two and a half lap route challenging. The course did not deter the Bedale contingent with four achieving personal best times for a 10K event. First home for the men was the consistently performing Paul Berry with a time of 43 minutes 15 seconds and an impressive position of 68th overall, and 8th finisher in his age group. Close behind was Paul Simpson, running his second race of the week, who achieved a PB of 43.48, and 79th out of the 373 finishers. New member Will Retchless is proving that he will be a strong contender in the club championship, finishing in a PB time of 44.09 for 84th overall. Next to finish was Nicola Simpson, also running her second race of the week, in a PB time of 45.39 for 112th overall, 12th female and 5th in her age catagory. Raymond Lightle had a strong finish to improve on his time last year at this event with a time of 46.42 for 127th and 5th in the M60 category. Relatively new member Alex McNairn is also making a strong impact, completing the race in 47.38 for a new PB and overall race position of 140th.

The latest race in the club’s championship was the Staveley Stampede 10K in which John Hunter was the only Bedale runner taking part. This is one of his favourite events which is well organised and has an excellent and friendly atmosphere. John ran well finishing 151st out of nearly 200 competitors in a time of 63.14. Meanwhile second claim member, Lena Conlin, was completing her 67th race over the marathon distance or more. The Hardmoor’s White Horse was a 27 mile trail race with over 4000 feet of ascent/descent. This was also the event that she passed over a thousand miles in the Hardmoor’s series over the years. Lena finished 1st FV50 for the race taking 6 hours 3 minutes to complete the course. Lena is an incredible running machine always happy to give advice and encouragement to others in the club.

There are always a few Bedale runners at every Catterick Parkrun, and on the recent first year anniversary several members took part with four finishing with personal bests for the course. Paul McGee had his first ever run at Catterick  and recorded an impressive time of 20 mins 07 secs for 71st out of over 300 taking part. New members Mark Thompson and Rachel Tait both posted PBs with fast times of 20.27 and 25.22 respectively. Rebecca Smith is running well this season and improved on her previous best to 24.08, closely followed by regular park runner Raymond Lightle who finished in a time of 24.13. Nicola and Paul Simpson ran with Nicola setting a PB of 21.56 and finishing 4th fastest female. Paul ran with his son Joshua who also recorded a PB of 27.44. John Hunter had a strong run to complete the course in 28.41.

Club Championship Updated

The Club Championship & Handicap tables have now been published detailing points and positions – Championship.

Current positions include all runners who have raced in a Championship race, but please note to be eligible at the end of the season, you will need to have run in 6 races (this can include one Wildcard race, please contact Becky Morris with race details if you would like a Wildcard race included).

In addition there are now ‘searchable’ tables detailing your finishing position in each of the races, Championship points for each race plus Handicap points for each race – Summaries

Note: The Championship points system has been rounded down to a maximum of 10 points per race rather than 100 points as originally published. This will have no effect on your finishing position against others, only that it is a smaller number for everyone to compute.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss the Championship or Handicap races please get in touch with Becky Morris or one of the other Committee Members.

Car Boot – Saturday 4th August

The club will be managing the Bedale Car Boot on Saturday 4th August. This is an opportunity for the club to make some money, as we get to keep the money collected in buckets and on the gate from sellers.

The money collected in the buckets this year will go to the Teenage Cancer Trust, and the money collected on the gate will go to Club funds.

Please could you let any of the committee members know if you are able to help out on the day with bucket collections or clearing up the site afterwards.

Fingers are crossed for a sunny day.

Lets go to the races!!!!

A trip to the races is being organised for Saturday 22nd September – Harvest Festival Race Day. Seven races are scheduled, with the first race starting at 2:25pm. Transport to and from the race course will be investigated once we know numbers.

Ticket prices for the Grandstand/Paddock are between £12 and £15 depending on the booking size.

Please contact Tasha Miller (Social Secretary – tashamoseley@hotmail.co.uk) or one of the other Committee members to advise if you are interested in joining us, so arrangements can start to be made.

Press update

Raymond Lightle often runs twice in the weekend with a 5K parkrun on the Saturday followed by a longer race on the Sunday. In his 63rd parkrun over a period of several years he recently ran his best ever parkrun time of 21.46 to finish 1st M65 at the Catterick event. The following day he was off to South Shields to run in the pier to pier race finishing in Sunderland, a distance of about 7 miles, some of which was on the beach. He finished in 53.17 which was 3 minutes faster than two years ago. Last weekend, again a good run at Catterick finishing in 23.31, followed the next day with a fast run at the Melmerby 10K in hot conditions to record 47.59 and 2nd out of 10 in the M65 age group.

On the same hot day the Northallerton 10K was taking place with four from the Bedale club taking part. The race was a sell out with a thousand competitors. However on the day 725 took on the testing course which climbs steadily for 6 to 7 Km, followed by a swift descent back into Northallerton where there was excellent support waiting to cheer runners home in the high street. Sue Wheeldon, 585th in 69.49, and Becky Morris 301st in 55.25, where the women’s contingent, with Phil Johnston 245th in 53.22, and Paul Bainbridge 191st in 51.22 completing the team.
Last Sunday saw Edinburgh hosting several events with Bedale’s Andy Gibb competing in the half marathon. Many thousands were taking part with Andy pleased to break the 2 hour barrier to finish 3760th in 1 hour 55 minutes.
Second claim member Lena Conlin spent last weekend on the North Yorkshire Moors competing in the Hardmoors 110, a 112 mile trail race along the Cleveland Way. She started at Filey at 8am on Saturday with competitors aiming to finish in Helmsley within 36 hours. Most had vehicle support and some also had people running with them after Saltburn at 52 miles. Lena was unsupported and relied on checkpoints to top up food and water. Saturday was sunny and breezy during the day but thick fog at night made the familiar unfamiliar. She made two navigational errors in the night making the total milage 113.3. After a chilly dawn Sunday soon became hot and windy and she finally arrived in Helmsley 33 hours and 8 seconds after leaving Filey, finishing a fantastic 4th female overall.

Upcoming Away Runs

Press Update

The weather was perfect for running last Sunday and there was an excellent atmosphere at the popular Ripon 10 mile event. Ten Bedale and Aiskew athletes were taking part in the field of just over 450. The race is a mixture of minor roads and cross country with some steep climbs along the way, so not one for fast times. Paul and Nicola Simpson are running the Liverpool Marathon in 7 days and were using this race in their preparation for that event, as well as the Catterick parkrun the day before. They ran together and were the first Bedale runners home in 1 hour 23 minutes and 118th position. Two new members of the club were running this event for the first time with Henry Anderson 168th in 1-27.50, and Tony Clark 197th in 1-31.10. Two of the older established members, who always have close competition, had top half finishes with Raymond Lightle recording 1-29.13 for 176th, and Paul Bainbridge 1-31.07 for 198th. Raymond had run the Catterick Parkrun the day before in a fantastic time of 22.35 and 1st place in the M65 group.

Phil Johnston is a very regular club night attender, but this was a rare race outing for him, and he enjoyed taking on the testing course to finish 233rd in 1-33.57. Lucy Atkinson was the second club lady home in a time of 1-39.09 and 289th overall, followed by Anna Welch in 345th in 1-45.28. Becky Morris did really well to take part having just returned from a week in the USA. Her body clock was telling her that this was not the time of day for a run, however she finished strongly in 379th and a time of 1-50.02.
On the same day the Leeds half marathon attracted over 6000 competitors with Bedale’s Alex McNairn running really well to finish 1184th in a time of 1-47.27. This having run at the Catterick Parkrun the day before with grand daughter Lola in a time of 28.01. Nicky Watkinson had a good run to finish in 25.50, with long term injured Helen Simpson helping out as a volunteer official. Paul McGee ran at the Bradford parkrun where nearly 500 were taking part.
